March 28, 2000:

UNITECA S.A. OF PORTUGAL EMPLOYS ASAHI GLASS'S BIPOLAR MEMBRANE CELL TECHNOLOGY.

UNITECA S.A., Estarreja, Portugal has awarded ASAHI GLASS CO. LTD. of Japan with a contract for the modernisation of the existing mercury cell based chloralkali plant.

The modernized plant will be equipped with the popular and state of the art bipolar electrolyser AZEC-B1. The capacity of the modernized plant will be 45'000 t/a caustic soda (100% basis) and the start-up is scheduled for second half of 2001.

Thus just another customer has decided in favour of the superior bipolar technology of ASAHI GLASS. For his decision the customer took into consideration the extensive operating experiences of Asahi Glass and the superior technical features of the AZEC-B1 technology such as the low energy consumption and the unique dam type electrolyte discharge and gas separation system which enhances the durability of the membranes.

The substantial reduction of energy consumption together with the drastically reduced maintenance cost makes the modernisation project a sound investment.

After commissioning of the new membrane cell plant, Portugal will be the first country in South-Europe producing chlorine and caustic soda entirely on environmental friendly membrane cell technology.

Krebs Swiss is the representative of Asahi Glass and provides consulting services during the implementation of the project.
